Highlights

  • ETH short positions on Bitfinex topped 101,000 ETH, up from roughly 771 ETH two weeks earlier.
  • Shorts had already reached 73,056 ETH on September 24, the highest level in 51 months.
  • Ether is trading near $2,690, about 79% above its June low of $1,506.
  • Resistance sits around $2,760 to $2,806; support clusters near $2,550.

Bearish bets on Ether at Bitfinex have gone from a rounding error to one of the largest concentrations of short exposure the exchange has seen in years, and they have done it in about 14 days.

Margin short positions in ETH on the venue climbed above 101,000 ETH over the weekend, according to exchange positioning data shared by Coin Bureau on Sunday. Two weeks earlier the same metric sat at roughly 771 ETH. That is an increase of about 13,000%, and at current prices the book now represents around $270 million in borrowed Ether that someone will eventually have to buy back.

The climb did not happen in a single jump. By September 24 the short book had already reached 73,056 ETH, its highest reading in 51 months, after adding roughly 53,800 ETH (about 280%) in a single week. Another 28,000 ETH or so arrived in the three days that followed. Those levels sit far above anything the exchange recorded through most of 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Shorting into strength

What makes the positioning unusual is the price it is leaning against. Ether bottomed at $1,506 in June and ran as high as $2,806 in September, an 86% recovery at the peak. It has since cooled only modestly. ETH changed hands near $2,690 over the weekend, roughly 10% higher on the week, and buyers have so far defended the breakout zone rather than giving it back.

That rally has not been an Ether-only story. Bitcoin's run through the low $80,000s was driven in large part by forced buying, as shorts got squeezed across the market, and ETF demand has returned on both sides of the majors, with bitcoin and ether funds pulling in $577 million in a recent stretch. Against that backdrop, a trader loading up on six-figure ETH shorts is either expecting a sharp reversal or doing something other than betting on direction.

Conviction or hedge?

That second possibility matters. Bitfinex margin shorts are a favourite tool of large, sophisticated accounts, and not every short is a bearish call. Institutions routinely borrow and sell ETH on exchange to hedge spot holdings, manage options exposure, or lock in a basis trade against futures or staked positions. A fund that bought Ether near the June lows and wants to protect a large paper gain without selling outright would produce exactly this kind of footprint.

There is a recent precedent. In May, Bitfinex ETH shorts doubled within 72 hours while Ether was stuck in a $2,280 to $2,400 range. At the time the build-up was read by several market watchers as positioning ahead of a volatility event rather than a unified bearish stance. Ether is now roughly $300 above the top of that range.

The data cannot say which camp this book falls into. What it can say is that the positions are concentrated, recent and large relative to what the venue normally carries.

The squeeze math

Concentration cuts both ways. If the shorts are directional and Ether breaks higher, their holders face rising borrowing costs and mounting losses, and at some point either close voluntarily or get liquidated. In both cases, covering means market buying. With more than 101,000 ETH on the book, even a partial unwind would add meaningful spot demand into a market that has been absorbing supply without much trouble.

The levels traders are watching are fairly tight. On the upside, the 100-week simple moving average near $2,761 and the September high around $2,806 form the first ceiling. A daily close above $2,800 would put every short opened during the last two weeks underwater. Beyond that, the next major resistance on the weekly chart sits near $3,447.

On the downside, the 100-week exponential moving average at roughly $2,558 lines up with horizontal support near $2,550. A loss of that zone would hand the shorts their first real win and open a path toward $2,180. If that happens, the story flips: the build-up would look less like squeeze fuel and more like early, well-timed positioning by traders who saw the rally stalling.

What to watch this week

The macro calendar gives Ether plenty of reasons to move. Traders are heading into a week that includes PCE inflation, payrolls and a string of rate-sensitive data that could lock in an October Fed hike. A hot print would favour the bears; a softer one would put pressure on a crowded short book almost immediately.

The Bitfinex numbers themselves are worth tracking daily. A short book that keeps growing while price holds above $2,550 suggests hedging demand is rising alongside spot exposure. A sudden drop in shorts paired with a jump in price would be the clearest sign that a squeeze has begun. For now, roughly 101,000 ETH of borrowed coins sit on one exchange, and Ether is only about 4% below the level where those bets start to hurt.
