Highlights
- ENA traded at $0.269 on September 26, up 277% from its $0.071 low on July 1.
- The token gained 31.6% over the past week and sits above both its 7-day and 30-day moving averages.
- Ethena began backing its roughly $4.9 billion USDe with Binance bStocks hedged by equity perpetuals.
- Ethena says Binance's equity basis has averaged about 11% annualized over six months.
Ethena's ENA has nearly quadrupled since the start of July, and the latest leg higher has a clear trigger: the protocol is taking its synthetic dollar out of pure crypto and into U.S. stocks.
ENA changed hands at $0.269 late on September 26, according to market data compiled by 10x Research, a 277% climb from the $0.071 low it printed on July 1. The token added 31.6% in the past week alone and is trading above both its 7-day and 30-day moving averages. It also marks a clean break of the $0.22 to $0.26 zone that capped the token during its January rally and acted as resistance as recently as September 20, when ENA stalled at $0.231 after a 71% run from a $0.135 higher low.
From crypto basis to equity basis
The catalyst landed on September 25. Ethena Labs said it would start backing USDe with tokenized U.S. equities on Binance, with allocations beginning the same day. The mechanics copy the trade that made USDe famous, just pointed at a different asset class. Instead of holding spot ETH or BTC and shorting perpetual futures against it, Ethena will hold Binance's bStocks (tokens that track U.S. stocks and ETFs and can be converted into the underlying shares on Binance.com, subject to local rules) and hedge them with short positions in Binance's equity perpetuals. The spread between the two, known as the basis, becomes yield for USDe holders.
Founder Guy Young did not undersell the move:
This is the most significant expansion of USDe's funding mechanism since we started.
The pitch is about scale. Ethena frames the change as widening its potential collateral pool from roughly $2.5 trillion in crypto assets to more than $150 trillion in real-world assets, and it expects the equity perpetual opportunity to eventually dwarf the $15 billion-plus of crypto perpetual basis it captured last cycle. The venue is growing quickly enough to make that plausible on paper. Binance's equity perpetuals carry about $2.9 billion in open interest, and Ethena says that open interest has grown around 30% a month over the past three months. Binance handled $433.4 billion in TradFi-linked trading volume in August, with $342.9 billion of that coming from equity-linked contracts. The exchange only opened U.S. stock and ETF trading, along with bStocks, in June.
There is also a risk tweak built in. Eligible delta-neutral accounts get a lower priority in Binance's auto-deleveraging queue, which matters for a strategy whose entire value depends on its hedge staying on during a violent market move.

Why the token is moving, not just the stablecoin
ENA holders care about this for a simple reason. USDe's growth, and the yield it can offer, has historically tracked crypto funding rates. When perpetual funding dried up, USDe supply shrank and so did the revenue story behind the governance token. A second, uncorrelated source of basis gives the protocol a way to keep yields competitive even in a quiet crypto derivatives market. Ethena says Binance's equity basis averaged roughly 11% annualized over the past six months.
The supply data is starting to respond. Ethena added $35.8 million in stablecoin market capitalization in a single 24-hour window, roughly half of the $71.4 million added by the five largest issuers, and USDe now sits near $4.9 billion. Around $90 million worth of ENA has been staked since September 16, pushing the total locked for yield to nearly $1.26 billion, which takes a meaningful chunk of float off the market.
The timing also fits a broader pattern of altcoins rallying on the back of real product or market-structure news rather than pure speculation. Institutional access has been widening on several fronts, from record weekly inflows into Solana ETFs to CME adding regulated futures on Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap, and Ethena is betting that equity markets can plug into crypto yield from the other direction.
What could go wrong
After a near-fourfold run, the question is how much of this is already priced. Technical analysts had flagged $0.171 to $0.188 (late-August highs now acting as support) as the zone ENA might revisit if momentum fades. On the fundamental side, the equity basis is young, depends on a single venue, and has only six months of history behind the headline yield figure. A crowded short-perp trade from Ethena could also compress that spread faster than expected. Much like the short squeeze that lifted HYPE and other altcoins earlier this cycle, rallies built on a single narrative can reverse just as sharply.
The next data points to watch are USDe supply over the coming weeks and how much of its backing Ethena actually rotates into bStocks. Supply growth would suggest the equity trade is producing yield depositors want. If it stays flat, the rally will look more like a reaction to the announcement than to anything the new trade has delivered.
