Zcash pushed past its own record books on September 19, with OKX quoting an intraday peak of $1,584 before the privacy coin settled near $1,553.95, up 5.79% on the day. It is the highest price ZEC has ever traded at, and it arrived alongside a wave of on-chain activity from some of the token's largest holders.
Arkham's monitoring flagged the most eye-catching move: wallet t1Lyq shifted $362.56 million worth of ZEC and sent $15 million of it to Coinbase, the address's first exchange deposit in ten months. When those coins first landed in the wallet, they were worth $163.88 million. At current prices, Arkham estimates the whale has banked roughly $361 million in profit since 2025, and the Coinbase deposit looks like the first sign of that position being converted to cash rather than simply held.
The move was not an isolated data point. On Hyperliquid, trader solanadoomer closed out a 14,300 ZEC position for about $5.24 million in profit, selling at an average price of $1,559.60, according to monitoring shared by on-chain analyst Ai Yi. Between the two, more than $367 million in ZEC value changed hands or moved toward exchanges within hours of the token setting its new high, a pace of whale activity that traders on Hyperliquid and other venues have been watching closely as leverage in the market builds.
Why Zcash Became the Market's Hottest Trade
The rally did not happen in isolation. Zcash has surged more than 2,400% since the start of 2026, climbing from outside the top 80 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization into the top ten. Three forces are doing most of the work: growing speculation around a potential Grayscale spot ZEC ETF, the conclusion of a related SEC inquiry into the asset, and a steady rise in shielded, privacy-preserving transaction volume on the network itself. Each of those threads has fed the same narrative, that Zcash is being re-rated from a legacy privacy coin into a scarcer, more institutionally relevant asset, and the price action this week reflects traders positioning for that shift rather than a single news catalyst.
That kind of vertical move is also exactly the environment that punishes leveraged bets against an asset, and it is not the first time in recent weeks that a fast breakout has forced shorts to cover in a hurry. Earlier this month, Bitcoin broke $80,000 as leveraged shorts across the market got squeezed, a move that pulled HYPE and other altcoins higher alongside it. Zcash's climb past $1,580 is following a similar script, just concentrated in a single, much smaller-cap token, which is part of why the swings in both directions have been so large.
The scale of whale and trader activity around ZEC this week also underscores how closely blockchain analytics firms are now tracking large wallets in real time, the same kind of on-chain surveillance that recently helped authorities in Japan, the United States and Germany jointly expose North Korea's WaterPlum crypto hacking network. Whether it is a legitimate long-term holder moving into Coinbase or a nation-state actor laundering stolen funds, wallet-level tracking has become one of the more consistent stories running underneath this cycle's price action.
For now, ZEC holders and prospective ETF issuers alike are watching whether the token can hold above $1,500 in the days ahead, or whether profit-taking from wallets like t1Lyq marks the start of a broader cool-down after one of 2026's sharpest rallies.
